About Risk Harbor

What Is Risk Harbor?

Risk Harbor is a risk management marketplace for decentralized finance (DeFi) that utilizes a completely automated, transparent, and impartial claims process to protect liquidity providers and stakers against smart contract hacks and attacks.

Over $721 million dollars in value has been lost to hacks and attacks on DeFi protocols in just over four years. Yield farmers and liquidity providers take on considerable tail risk when staking their assets in protocols, even protocols that have been audited. Until now, financial derivative and insurance protocols designed to manage these risks were either overpriced or fundamentally flawed in design. Risk Harbor is the first decentralized two-sided marketplace for fully automated risk management financial derivates.

Roadmap

  • Perpetual coverage. The idea of perpetual coverage is that currently, we have contracts that expire on a certain date. Specifically, the protection expires at a certain block and then we have to deploy new contracts after expiration. However, this is not the most capital-efficient process for underwriters as they have to constantly move their liquidity (e.g. stake, unstake, withdraw, deposit, etc.) to a new pool. We are planning for a lot of improvements to efficiency in v3 but one way is through perpetual protection. Basically, as a protection buyer, your token is an ERC-1155 that tells you exactly when your protection expires and if you try to file a claim beyond that expiration date, it will revert. Therefore, we intend on selling protection without an expiration date. So if a user comes in and buys protection for 180 days, this pool will continue to provide protection indefinitely and underwriters can come in and out of pools without having to move capital which ultimately saves money for all parties involved in the long term.
  • Reinsurance. If someone wanted to exit their position as an underwriter to enter another more – lucrative pool, we will allow them to buy up enough protection to cover their position and once that occurs, we can then shift the liquidity over to whichever pool the underwriter would want to enter.
  • Risk pooling. In essence, risk pooling will improve capital efficiency. The way this would operate is by taking very non-risky protocols and grouping them in a basket with newer or slightly riskier protocols that may be unaudited all into a single pool. This allows for 1 dollar to protect more pools at a single time which as a result improves overall capital efficiency. The only risk here is if two or more protocols fail at the same time. But the way we mitigate this is by ensuring that the protocols grouped together are uncorrelated, therefore decreasing risk exposure for the entire pool.

Risk Harbor Token Economy

What are some of the functions Governance will have?

The ability to vote on what protocols Risk Harbor will integrate with

The ability for Governance to elect and vote for asset managers to manage all the idle capital. These asset managers will get a percentage as a performance fee.

The ability to vote for buybacks, which is legally better than paying dividends.
